Private genetic counselling and genetic testing for inherited cardiac conditions

What exactly is an inherited cardiac condition, and how can I find out what my risk of being affected is?

Once thought to be rare, we now think that inherited cardiac conditions (ICCs) occur in around 1 in 250 people.

An ICC is a condition that is caused by an underyling genetic predisposition, often in the form of a gene that isn’t working as it should do. ICCs are different to aquired heart conditions which are caused by lifestyle and environmental factors.

Some of the more common types of ICC include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), amyloidosis, Long QT syndrome (LQTS), and Brugada syndrome (BrS).

Understanding your personal risk of an ICC begins with a thorough review of your personal history and family history. If appropriate, genetic testing with the aim of finding the underlying cause
